Subterranean Sanctuaries: Underground Gardening Techniques

submitted on 26 November 2023 by thegardendirectory.org

A Brief History of Underground Gardening

Once upon a time, in a land beneath our feet, there were magnificent gardens. No, I'm not talking about the enchanted forests of fairy tales or the secret gardens of ancient civilizations. I'm talking about the dark and mysterious world of underground gardening! While some might consider this a modern-day phenomenon, it's actually a practice that dates back to the dawn of agriculture. In prehistoric times, our cave-dwelling ancestors discovered that they could cultivate plants in the subterranean recesses of their caves, providing them with a year-round supply of fresh food. This innovative technique is known today as underground gardening, and it's making a comeback!

Why Go Underground?

If you're new to the concept of underground gardening, you might be wondering why on Earth (or should I say, under Earth) anyone would want to grow plants in the dark, damp, and chilly environment of a cave or tunnel. Well, there are actually several compelling reasons to go down this rabbit hole:
  • Climate Control: Caves and tunnels naturally maintain a constant temperature, making them an ideal growing environment for plants that are sensitive to fluctuations in temperature and humidity. This allows gardeners to grow a wider variety of plants, including some that might not otherwise thrive in their region.
  • Pest Control: Growing plants underground means fewer pests and diseases to contend with. No more battling aphids, slugs, or other critters that love to munch on your precious plants!
  • Space Saving: Making use of underground spaces can help alleviate the pressure of finding adequate gardening space, especially in urban areas. Plus, the vertical nature of many cave and tunnel systems means you can grow plants on multiple levels, further maximizing space.
  • Stealth: For those with a penchant for secrecy or a desire to cultivate plants that might raise eyebrows in the open air, underground gardening can provide the perfect cover.

Let There Be Light!

Now, you might be thinking, "This all sounds well and good, but what about the lack of sunlight? Don't plants need light to grow?" You're not wrong, dear horticulturist! While it's true that many plants require sunlight to photosynthesize, underground gardeners have a few tricks up their sleeves to ensure their subterranean sanctuaries are bathed in light:
  • Solatubes: These clever devices are designed to capture sunlight from the surface and funnel it down into the depths below. They can even be equipped with mirrors to direct light exactly where it's needed.
  • Grow Lights: Modern LED grow lights can provide the full spectrum of light required for plant growth, allowing underground gardeners to simulate natural sunlight without the need for a direct connection to the surface.
  • Hydroponics: By growing plants hydroponically (i.e., in water rather than soil), gardeners can reduce the amount of light required for plant growth by providing the necessary nutrients directly to the roots. This can make it easier to maintain healthy plants in low-light environments.

Getting Started with Your Own Underground Garden

Now that you're convinced that underground gardening is the wave of the future (and the past, apparently), you might be eager to start digging your own subterranean sanctuary. But before you grab your shovel and start tunneling, there are a few important considerations to keep in mind:
  • Location, Location, Location: Not all underground spaces are created equal. Look for a location with good drainage, stable soil or rock formations, and preferably some natural light sources (e.g., skylights or cracks in the rock).
  • Design Matters: As with any garden, the layout of your underground space will play a crucial role in the success of your plants. Consider factors like air circulation, light distribution, and plant placement to create a harmonious environment that encourages growth.
  • Choose Your Plants Wisely: Some plants are better suited to underground gardening than others. Look for varieties that are tolerant of low light and humidity, and select plants with complementary growing habits to create a diverse and productive ecosystem.
  • Safety First: Underground gardening can be a hazardous endeavor. Be sure to take appropriate safety precautions, such as shoring up unstable areas, wearing protective gear, and having an emergency plan in place should things go awry.

Embrace Your Inner Mole

With the right preparation and a little ingenuity, you too can join the ranks of the underground gardening elite. So go ahead, embrace your inner mole, and start cultivating a subterranean sanctuary that would make our cave-dwelling ancestors proud!
